Registration is not currently required for
posting comments. However, as features are added to the site as time
goes on, only registered users will be able to have things such as
a quantifiable post count and easily-browseable post history. By
registering, you'll also reserve that name for yourself (anonymous
posters may use the same name, but show up as anonymous in
discussions). The choice is up to you.
